"Asking someone out"

Ok, so what does that really mean? During middle school "asking someone out" went like this: Boy: hi Girl: hi Boy: do you want to go out?/want to be my girlfriend? Girl: sure! :D *both walk off (probably to only see each other at school, and POSSIBLY hold hands)* and now in high school, at least as a sophmore, it seems to go like this: Boy: sup Gril: hey Boy: wanna go out?/would you be my girlfriend? Girl: sure! :D *walk off, hold hands, probably kiss in front of everybody and go to a few places.. etc etc* idk about you, but i never thought that simply going up to someone and asking them "hey wanna go out? :D" is how this stuff works. i mean really, asking someone out is like saying, "hey wanna go see a movie" or "want to go get something to eat with me :D" and then things fall in line later. is it just the mentality of younger kids that the all important question of "asking someone out" bonds two people? ._.
