My friend said this: "We live in a society which worries a lot about mental health, maybe even more than physical health, but should we really care so much about it? Around the world, more and more people are going to a psychologist, to talk with strangers about their lives, their secrets. I'm asking this question because recently we had a philosophy class in which we started talking about how automatized people are nowadays, and it gave you an example that said "If a wife sees her husband and he starts to float, such will be the shock to the woman that she will fall unconscious and will need to go to a psychologist afterwards." And then I started arguing that that text was really silly for including that, and well, we went really off topic. I also found out that most of my friends went to a psychologist during their childhood at least once, and it kinda surprised me because my opinion on psychologists is that their job is, mostly, stupid. (no offense anybody) So this is the question I've started to ask myself. Is mental health overrated nowadays? Should we care that much about visiting a psychologist and telling them our secrets? If you saw your wife/husband floating around, would you really need therapy?"

mental health before physical health always

Mental Health is very important. That is what stops an otherwise irritated individual from becoming mass-murder-suicidal.

People eventually go to a psychologist to deal with "trauma" and "stress" and "depression."

Yeah, it's overrated. Important, but there's too much hype over it.

For most people, mental health is overrated. For some people, it's not if they're mentally unstable.

Yeah, because having bad mental health only leads to suicide and depression. Who cares?

Not only is mental health alone important, but it can also affect physical health. Doubly important.

ClementZ said: "Yeah, it's overrated. Important, but there's too much hype over it." Many people have maladaptive behaviors that need changing, not because they're bad or because society views them as wrong, but because they are impeding upon said person's everyday life. Psychotherapy has shown to be efficacious for many disorders; effective new treatments are even being developed for personality disorders, which previously had been thought as untreatable. Most therapists now aren't going to ask you about your mother and hypnotize you--they are going to use methods that have been found to be efficacious in research, and try to not only validate your emotions and yourself, but also work on changing unhealthy thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that you may engage in and which are preventing you from leading the kind of life that you want to lead. If you don't feel like you need therapy, you don't have to get it. But keep in mind that there are many people out there who are suicidal, cutting themselves, experiencing hallucinations/delusions, so depressed that they cannot leave their bed, so terrified of something that they avoid anything even related to it, so anxious that they have moments where they feel they are going to die, keep reliving a traumatic experience they had and won't even sleep for fear of what dreams they may experience, and many other numerous problems that need attention. It's great if you feel like you can handle your problems on your own. Not everyone can.

the woman in your text book sound a bit hallucinogenic. I don't think she would be able to properly function in society if she sees people "floating around". I'd say it would be the right course of action to see someone who could give her some kind of medication, or just therapy. Although I don't think therapy alone would cure that. I'd have to know more about the woman.
