To all song writers

When you guys are trying to come up with a song do you usually write the lyrics first or write the melody and chord progressions. I've been working on this melody for awhile now and its about done but I'm having trouble putting it to words. I'm also asking just out of pure curiosity how do you guys come up with your songs :D

I`m really not that great, but I usually come up with lyrics first, and just steal someones chords to see if it fits the lyrics.

I usually have the chords first. For me, the lyrics are easy to write when you know how the tune sounds like.

I have yet to piece together a set of lyrics and a melody.. ;___; I have a short melody.. I have MANY lyrics, yet no songs.

I usually come across a random progression and build lyrics around it. October up there helped me out today. :D

Lol thats usually what happens to my songs if i cant find a nice melody for them, i just turn them into raps.. and this isnt the first song ive written its more like the first i cant put words too =/

First, i think about a story. A reason behind the song. Then i come up with all kinds of words and just write them down on paper. Then i look a little at these words and try to make them into something. Then i think about the tempo i want to use, and the cords. (depending on mood of song and the words) Then it's writing time.. "All my days.. All my life.. I have questions wrong and right" "Everything that i see makes me face reality" "And in there's you, a million miles, comes together with a smile"

I guess everyone has their own style to writing, like when i write i sit down in a quiet room with my guitar and a notebook (Because if i'm listening to music or watching tv my songs start sounding like other bands or t.v infomercials) i usually right about things that have happened to me or people i know but occasionally ill make something up off the top of my head and throw it in with a few chords and attempt to make something out of that.

I usually write poems and turn them into songs. Like, whatever melody I think of when I`m reading them.
