He sat at the table, sipping the hot coffee. He stared blankly at the wall in front of him, as he pondered days past, and days ahead. He put the coffee mug on table, and then stared at that. He then swirled it a bit, watching the liquid in the half full cup swish this way, swash that way. It was a dark, brown, watery liquid. It was the only thing that got him through the day; he depended on it. He had no family, no children, no friends, just coffee. Of course, there was his job, there was his fancy clothing, his giant house, but none of it really mattered to him. Coffee didn�t really replace these things, the other things just disappeared in his life, and coffee fell into the list as most important, because there was nothing else. Just as in the absence of light, there is just dark. Coffee became a sound in the dark. It brought him hope, it gave him meaning. Sometimes he drank coffee with other people, and it brought him memories of his past days of fun with his family. After he went off to school, he thought, my family came to resent my success, as did everyone else. They wanted to take away my money, they wanted to take away my power, they wanted me back. I suppose it was only because they loved me, but how could I give up such a thing I worked so hard for� No matter, there�s always tomorrow.
