How would you feel towards an optional death penalty?

I personally think it would be more humane to offer a life sentence or death penalty to convicts, and let them decide for themselves if they want to continue living the rest of their lives in prison or not.

That's actually very interesting... If they ask it to be done, then it doesn't really hit the same nerve that regular death penalty does. It's not hypocrisy, but it brings up the issue of keeping them alive vs killing them. I could never remember which was cheaper, and that might be an important factor.

Take the pirate captain that we caught a week or so back ago. Our punishment would be jail for life, on the other hand, we could send them over to Kenya where he was obtained. And I think Kenya's punishment would be the death penalty. I would honestly rather die AT THAT MOMENT, then die, in jail, later.

I think one of the major factors of prison is that a person has all of their choices taken from them. I don't think giving them the option to take an "easy way out" (let's face it, those who have life sentences handed to them have done horrible things to deserve it. Not living through the suffering of being reminded every day of what they did, is why I call it the easy way out.) would benefit the prison system.

And I think killing them off would be cheaper. One moment to buy/secure all those things to kill the person as opposed to however many years he has left to live in the prison and keeping him alive. I do agree, it doesn't bring up the same problem as the regular death penalty. @Jinxiy Good point.

So the more we're keeping alive, the more that increases and the more prisons we need. So it is a bit tough for me to guess which would cost more. I completely forgot the point Jinxiy brought up though, making them live with their crime. Which aside from the imprisonment, is definitely part of their punishment. If they're really done something horrible, they shouldn't be allowed an "easy" way out.
