Sweden's new Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive (IPRED) anti-piracy law went into effect last week, the new law giving copyright holders in Sweden the ability to force ISPs in the country to hand over the names and addresses of users who transmit pirated material. But as it turns out, the concept is being foiled not by pirates, but by ISPs. Since preservation of IP addresses is entirely voluntary under the law for ISPs, at least one ISP is deleting consumer IP data so they don't have to hand it over to the entertainment industry. |
